The Friends of Pahranagat Valley (FoPV), in collaboration with the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) Trail Solutions, are thrilled to announce the Pahranagat Valley Trails Concept Plan.
This groundbreaking plan outlines a vision for a new system of natural surface trails and bike facilities that will offer incredible opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, and jogging to Pahranagat Valley.
A Vision for a More Active Community
The Pahranagat Valley Trails Concept Plan is born from a desire to enhance the quality of life for Pahranagat Valley residents by providing easily accessible, high-quality outdoor recreation. Currently, Alamo has limited developed non-motorized trail options, with the nearest significant trail systems being almost an hour’s drive away. This plan aims to change that, creating a vibrant network of trails right on our doorstep.
What to Look Forward To
The concept plan focuses on several key areas, divided into “zones” to guide development:
- Zone 1: The Backyard Skills Area: This priority zone aims to establish a community-based riding area conveniently located near the Pahranagat Valley Elementary School, rodeo grounds, and splash pad. Imagine a pump track, a progressive jump line, and a beginner skills loop – perfect for youth and adults to develop their biking abilities close to home.
- Zone 2: Sand Flats Beginner Trails – Designed for riders of all levels, these trails offer a close-to-home mountain biking experience, serving as a gateway to more intermediate and advanced trails in Zone 3. This includes a Pahranagat Lake connector trail, expanding your riding options.
- Zone 3: Shark Fin Advanced: As the terrain transitions from sand flats to rugged ridges, Zone 3 will host exciting intermediate to advanced mountain bike-optimized trails, boasting breathtaking panoramic vistas and thrilling descents. This zone promises some of the most unique mountain biking experiences in the region.
- Zone 4: Bighorn Trailhead – Hike/Bike: Offering a mix of intermediate and advanced mountain bike trails, this zone will also provide exceptional hiking opportunities amidst captivating volcanic tuff geology, with the bonus of potential bighorn sheep sightings.
- Zone 5: Bighorn Connector & Zone 6: Pahranagat Lake Link: These zones will further connect the town of Alamo to the scenic Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge, creating larger loops for beginner and intermediate riders, and even advanced challenges for experienced cyclists.
Beyond the Trails: A Hub for Community
This plan is more than just trails; it’s about fostering community pride and promoting healthy lifestyles. Studies show that proximity to recreational facilities increases physical activity.
Next Steps and How You Can Get Involved
This concept plan is a guiding vision, and community engagement is paramount to its success. We will be forming a trails subcommittee to plan next steps and ensure the trails and facilities truly meet the needs of our community. The development will be phased, with Phase 1 focusing on Zone 1 due to its community focus and Lincoln County ownership, which may expedite the process. A design plan for the bike park has been created and is visible below. Phase 2 will concentrate on Zones 2, 3, and 4 on BLM-managed land, initiating the necessary environmental reviews early. Phase 3 will bring the more advanced challenges of Zones 5 and 6 to life.
